Fun Facts about the Lake of the Ozarks

It's that time of year when all the boaters start to get that itch to get out on the water and soak up the beautiful weather! Although we have experienced a fairly mild winter thus far, we are all still anxiously waiting for the warm days of spring to get out and enjoy boating at the Lake of the Ozarks. - The Lake is 92 miles long, from end to end.

- The unusual shape of the Lake is the reason for it's nickname, "Magic Dragon".

- When it was build in 1931, the Lake of the Ozarks was the largest man-made lake in the United States.

- 640 billion gallons of water are found in the Lake.

- It took two years to build the dam and only 78 days to fill the Lake!

- About 10,000 boaters can be found enjoying the water, on summer holiday weekends.

- The Lake's surface water covers 61,000 square miles.


- Electric supply to St. Louis is the reason Bagnell Dam was originally built.

- There are over 1,150 miles of shoreline at the Lake of the Ozarks.

- Roughly 3.5 million visitors make their way to the Lake of the Ozarks, during the summer season.

- $30 million was the total cost to build Bagnell Dam.
